We had no idea about this trail when 2Monkeys sister in-law mentioned that she want to do theVia Francigena pilgrim trail. This route was started by ancient pilgrims that originate from Canterbury, UK to Rome, Italy that passes France and Switzerland. We decided to join her and after some discussion, we decided to just do the trail in stages as we don't have much time to do the whole route in one go. We chose the portion of Italy in the Tuscany Valley as this trail is the easiest and has the best scenery, we were told. We flew to Florence, Italy on transit in Amsterdam. We took the train to Lucca, stayed overnight then hopped on the train to San Miniato where we were picked up the next morning and taken to the trail next to an old church to start our trek. This turned out to be one of our most amazing trips ever.

The Path:
We get into this old agricultural trail and we hiked for more than ten miles (? km) on our first day. We ended up on this town of Gambassi Terme.

The Hike:
The hike was moderate, as the area is hilly. Also, the scenery was pleasant to the eye and the
weather was nice. We passed a few abandoned buildings and crossed some streams.

The Bed:
Our accommodations were somewhat varied but always had a character. We stayed in a monastery turned into a hotel, a Castle, an old house turned into Bed & Breakfast, and a medieval building in an ancient town but all had nice rooms with different decor.

The Breakfast:
It was so good! A buffet style with all you can eat and drink. They even served you cappuccino with a smile if you asked. Bread, Cakes, Pastries, Fruits, Juices, Yogurt, and coffee, tea.

The Recreation:
Aside from the beautiful scenery, we went to a hot spring and frolicked the whole day in this spa-like outdoor place. The warm water invigorates you to have another day of more walking.

The Beer Time:
In between evening stops and rest, we sat outside to take in the view or watch the sunset with a cold beer before dinner, and of course taking selfies.
